Zee Cine Awards 2014: Top 10 Moments

Sunday, 16 February 2014 | 12:00 pm

There is IST (Indian Standard Time) and there is BST (Bollywood Standard Time). Most events in T’town adhere to the latter which effectively means there is no fixed time an event starts and definitely no time for it to end. What’s more BST is even more lax and lags way behind IST which is euphemistically called the Indian Stretchable Time, a tribute to our inability to stick to deadlines! And one got a full dose of BST – the crazy schedules that Bollywood follows at the Zee Cine Awards 2014 held at FilmCity in Mumbai on 8 February 2014! The show, which was supposed to start at 8pm, got inordinately delayed and stretched on by four hours, even prompting the anchors to joke about people going off to sleep!

While that may be routine for Bollywood events what kept most viewers riveted to their seats at this particular awards night was the sharp script which provided genuine laughs, great hosting by Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and Manish Paul, and some fabulous performances by Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar.

Masala! was present at Reliance Mediaworks Studios at FilmCity, Mumbai for the annual Zee Cine Awards night and we present here 10 highlights of what must have surely been the longest awards night of the season!

1. Shah Rukh Khan’s Looong Performance

We all know how SRK loves the stage. But his act was stretched even by normal Bollywood standards. SRK introduced the best movies nomination and enacted a spoof on each film (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dhoom:3). They were funny especially since he was accompanied by comedienne Bharati in some segments and together they made an adorable, if somewhat odd combo. However, these acts, interspersed with awards and performances, made it quite long. How about some brevity, SRK?

2. Shah Rukh Khan Turns Magician

Long or not, one thing you can never fault King Khan is on his energy levels. He was still recovering from his injury (which he sustained during the shoot of Happy New Year) which made him excuse himself from dancing but instead, he performed magic. From turning a stick into a rose and producing handkerchiefs out of nowhere, SRK’s new role was quite impressive!

3. Manish Paul Covers Up Glitches

Manish Paul must be one of the best anchors around. Funny, natural and extremely witty, he came up with his own lines even when the teleprompter failed him or when he was faced with other technical glitches.

4. Bluffmasters Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh

Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh still share great chemistry on stage. They were mostly doing backstage acts but appeared to host a few segments. Cool, fun and sporting, they had the audiences rolling with laughter with their self-depreciating humour and brilliant repartee. Sample this: When Sonakshi Sinha, who won a trophy, expressed surprise at her award and asked if they were sure about her name, Abhis deadpan answer was: At 3am, we are always sure!

5. Ranveer Singhs Special Gesture for His Link-ups

Ranveer Singh was called upon to honour both Deepika and Sonakshi strange, considering he has been linked with both of them!

6. Riteish Calls Ranveer an “Enthu Cutlet”

Among performances, Ranveers ranks among the best. He had a 12-minute show where he danced to a medley of hits from the past and present. It was an act that he had been practicing the night before at 3.30am! No wonder his zest for dance prompted Riteish Deshmukh to address him as enthu cutlet.

7. Ayan Mukerji’s Guilt

In one of the categories, Ayan Mukerji walked away with the trophy beating other favourites. He almost seemed apologetic about it and confessed he felt ‘guilty’ about receiving the award. Now, when was the last time you head that from a director.

8. Ayan Mukherji Wanted to Party

Ayan was also honest about wanting to join his friends for a party rather than attend the awards night. He was constantly checking his phone and when we asked him about it, he said he was dying to join some friends who were grooving away elsewhere. His companion Deepika was happy to be there but told us she hoped it wouldn’t be one of those “5-hour shows.” Well, it turned out to be exactly that!

9. Akshay Kumar’s Bike Stunt

The best was for the last. Akshay Kumar arrived in a bike on stage and set it afire – literally – with his moves and stunts. Though incredibly late into the night, his performance livened up the entire auditorium, once again proving that when it comes to stunts and action, there is only one star – our khiladi Kumar!

10. Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam’s Siyappa

Ali Zafar introduced his latest movie Total Siyappa where he co-stars Yami Gautam. The two put up a cute performance together though we couldn’t help but feel that Yami was a bit stiff while dancing.
